Tell me about your musical roots
I really started listening to music through childhood friends older than me in the early 80s. David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Talking Heads, PiL, Fischer-Z, and the Stranglers were some of the names I heard quite often and retained from that time. In the mid-80s, with the Punk movement having considerable expression in Portugal, I started to like this genre of music, and everything changed radically when I received the Ramones album “It’s Alive” as a gift from an uncle of mine. From then on, names like The Clash (my favourite band of all time), Sex Pistols, Madness, Big Audio Dynamite, and others had a great influence on me until things started to change again in the late 80s and early 90s.Here begins my introduction to electronic music and my career as a DJ. At an early stage, names like Larry Levan, David Mancuso, DJ Harvey, and Idjut Boys, then Phil Asher, Ron Trent, and Larry Heard, were decisive in shaping my musical taste. Then, there was a whole evolution until today with the influence of many DJs, producers, and labels. It would be difficult to name them all here, with genres ranging from Downtempo and Ambient to House, Techno, and Trance.
What is your favourite place to dig and why?
My favourite places to dig are on Discogs and Gazela Records, the place of an old friend with more than 80 thousand records for sale, where I have the opportunity to spend a lot of time digging and have first-hand access to new record collections that he is acquiring. Online stores are always a possibility Hardwax, Decks, and Deejay are the ones I use the most. Then, whenever I have the chance when I travel abroad, I still like to go straight to the stores. Here in Lisbon, Collect, TV Dance Records, and Carpet & Snares (which I was one of the founders of in 2014 and stayed until 2017) are places I also like to go to on a regular basis.
What do you listen to when you want to chill?
To relax, I like listening to more downtempo and ambient stuff.
Can you share with me your favourite podcast at the moment?
I have had several favourite sets over the years, but there is one that I highly recommend. It was one of the last ones I heard on Collect Radio, and it really surprised me. I witnessed it live, and it's all there... music selection, creativity, technique, and sound volume suited to what was happening at the venue. It is from a super talented kid from the new generation called Pitcho, who, for me, will be one of the best Portuguese DJs in the near future.
